Kids and Braces

Posted .

Do you have any idea when the right time to take your kids to the orthodontist for the first time is? If you answered no, then you’re actually like most parents. It’s a hard guessing game for a parent to know when is the right time for kids to be evaluated for potential orthodontic needs, but it’s something important enough that you can’t ignore it.

With that in mind, let’s look at a few ways you can tell that your children will need braces at some point in the growing up years.

Misaligned bite

If you notice that your children have a bite that doesn’t line up – or is misaligned – then it’s time to take them to an orthodontist. A misaligned bite looks like one where the teeth don’t all quite align with one another when your child bites down. It’s relatively easy to spot if you pay enough attention to your children’s smiles.

After the first few adult teeth

Once your child has lost some baby teeth and has their first few adult teeth in, an orthodontist can usually get a good idea of what kind of, if any, treatment will be necessary to correct tooth alignment. Even if you’re not seeing crowded teeth or a misaligned bite, it’s still a good idea to bring your kids in at this age – usually around 5 or 6 years old – to at least be looked at by an orthodontist.
